There is never really a wrong season for good bread, but some days I find myself craving a freshly baked baguette or a simple sandwich.
On this trip, I spent the afternoon walking from Yeonhui-dong to Yeonnam-dong, stopping at two bakeries that many locals recommend. Neither is a café where people linger for hours. Instead, both focus on freshly baked bread that is perfect for taking away and enjoying somewhere nearby.
Although their styles are different, both left me convinced that they are well worth the visit.
Pain d hier (Yeonhui-dong)

Tucked away on a quiet street in Yeonhui-dong, Pain d hier is a small neighborhood bakery that lets the bread speak for itself.
The baguettes and sandwiches are what bring most people here. I ordered both, and they were exactly the kind of meal I was hoping for.
The baguette had a crisp crust with a soft, chewy interior, while the sandwich was filled with fresh ingredients that tasted simple and balanced. It was satisfying enough to replace lunch without feeling too heavy.
Since the bakery mainly serves takeaway customers, I thought it would be the perfect place to pick up bread before heading to a nearby park.

Even on a weekday, there was a steady line of customers. I also noticed quite a few international visitors stopping by, which made me feel even more confident about my choice.
Mandong Bakery (Yeonnam-dong)
After leaving Yeonhui-dong, I continued my walk to Mandong Bakery in nearby Yeonnam-dong.
This bakery is already well known among bread lovers, especially for its garlic baguette.
The outside was beautifully crisp while the inside stayed soft and moist. Combined with the rich butter and roasted garlic flavor, it was easy to understand why so many people recommend it.
There was also a wide variety of breads to choose from, making it difficult to leave with just one. I appreciated that the bakery offered samples, which made deciding a little easier.
Like Pain d hier, Mandong Bakery is primarily a takeaway bakery, making it an easy stop while exploring the neighborhood.
Which One Should You Visit?
After visiting both, I realized they each have their own personality.
If you’re looking for a simple baguette or a fresh sandwich made with quality ingredients, I would recommend Pain d hier
If you’re in the mood for richer flavors, especially the famous garlic baguette, Mandong Bakery is an excellent choice.
Since Yeonhui-dong and Yeonnam-dong are close enough to explore on foot, visiting both bakeries in a single afternoon makes for a wonderful bread-themed walk.
Sometimes the best travel memories come from something as simple as carrying a warm loaf of bread while wandering through a quiet neighborhood.
