Barange's travelogue Korea. (based in seoul, South Korea)

If Hannam-dong is Seoul’s hub for “sophisticated trendiness,” SObb is its calm, quiet center. Tucked away in the stylish backstreets of Hannam, SObb is a space designed for those who appreciate the beauty of simplicity and high-quality craft.
Hannam-dong itself is one of Seoul’s most design-conscious neighborhoods — home to galleries, concept stores, and the Leeum Museum of Art just up the hill. The area draws a mix of local creatives and international visitors, and its café scene reflects that: minimal interiors, careful sourcing, and a slower pace than the more tourist-heavy parts of the city. SObb fits that mold closely, favoring quiet materials and natural light over anything flashy.

The stainless steel sign goes well with the red brick wall — a small detail, but it sets the tone before you even step inside: understated, material-driven, a little industrial.

The coffee itself is strong and savory, served in unique, thin-walled cups that make each sip feel more considered than the average café pour.
SObb is particularly known for its signature cream-based coffees. The cream is dense and velvety but well balanced — not oversweetened — so the espresso underneath still comes through clearly. The desserts are as much a visual treat as a culinary one, and whether you order a simple Americano or one of the seasonal specials, the bean quality is easy to taste. Overall, the flavor profile leans balanced and smooth, which makes it approachable even if you don’t usually go for cream-forward drinks.

Material choice does a lot of the work here. Warm wood gives the space texture, while iron accents add a more modern, slightly industrial edge — the combination reads as both luxurious and restrained, which is a difficult balance for a café interior to strike.
Even small service items — the stainless steel tools used at the counter — are chosen with the same design logic as the rest of the space.
The overall palette is soft off-white, warm wood, and sleek stainless steel, which makes the space feel bright and airy without feeling cold. Furniture and lighting follow clean, geometric lines, and the large windows let in enough natural light that it’s become a popular spot for people taking photos — the kind of clean, minimal aesthetic that photographs well in almost any light. Honestly, it feels closer to a small design gallery than a typical coffee shop; even the empty space feels intentional.

The triangular table is one of the more distinctive furniture choices in the space — its angles and proportions echo the geometry used throughout the café.

The brick-like tile on the wall recalls old European buildings and adds a slightly worn, layered texture that keeps the space from feeling too sterile despite its minimalism.

The herringbone floor pattern, the furniture, and the view outside the window all work together — a small but well-considered detail that ties the room together.

Getting There

The nearest subway stop is Itaewon Station (Line 6), but SObb is roughly a 15-minute walk away, mostly uphill through winding backstreets. It’s not a difficult walk, but it’s worth knowing in advance if you’re visiting in summer heat or with limited mobility — comfortable shoes are a good idea. Alternatively, a short taxi ride from Itaewon or Hangangjin Station will get you there in a few minutes if you’d rather skip the climb.

My Personal Feelings & Recommendations

The only real drawback here is that uphill walk from Itaewon Station — it’s a winding path that isn’t the easiest, especially in the heat. That said, if you want good coffee in a genuinely well-designed space, it’s worth the climb. I’d pair a visit here with a walk through the rest of Hannam-dong’s gallery and concept-store scene, since SObb sits right in the middle of that walkable stretch.
